My severely dyslexic daughter is a 10th grader and has been working with Susie Pickett for 4 years. She was formally diagnosed with Dyslexia in the 2nd grade. Do not wait any longer to get your child help! We wasted 6 years of critical learning time using methods that did not work. She has tried Barton, Wilson, Fundations, Fountas & Pinnell, Orton-Gillingham--you name it, we've tried it. The problem with those methods is that the technique requires memorization of rules that Dyslexics, who already have poor working memory, have difficulty memorizing. Most Dyslexics have co-morbid ADHD, so memorizing grammar/spelling rules is too tedious. Susie teaches Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) and this method teaches words through meaning, structure (how a word is built: i.e., suffixes and prefixes), relatives (families of words built from the word's base), and understanding how phonemes and graphemes function in the word. This makes more sense because it's word association with meaning, which is all the difference. I was skeptical at first since it didn't seem like there was a set curriculum, but that's because each person is so different and has different interests, so Susie customizes lessons around high-interest subjects to keep it fun. I’m so glad we stuck with it. My daughter tells me almost every day now that she is reading things on her own. Warning: it’s not cheap, but worth every penny since my daughter now reads. It has made math and all other subjects easier to access. All of her tutoring is remote and it totally works. Susie is a credentialed teacher who is amazingly patient and very good with kids of all different temperaments. My daughter loves working with Susie. Her teaching has helped her regain her confidence to finally read, on her own. She will tell you that she enjoys her lessons with Susie.
