After years of teaching primary-age children to read and spell using phonics and balanced literacy, Susie earned an M.Ed., became a Reading Specialist, and took additional training in Orton-Gillingham methods for students who were not thriving in a classroom setting. She has taught in K-6 classrooms before taking on the roles of Literacy Specialist, Math Specialist, and Reading Specialist in both public and private schools. She works with students diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, autism, anxiety, and other learning challenges that hinder students ability to learn in a classroom setting alone.
Along the way, she discovered Structured Word Inquiry. She continues to be an active scholar, studying with WordWorksKingston, RealSpelling, and many others in the growing community of teachers, scholars, parents, and students who are learning how English is written. She has coached students in mathematics up to Algebra 2, bringing conceptual understanding (not just rote memorization) to struggling students.
