This is Structured Word Inquiry, introduced to me 2014 by Peter Bowers of WordWorksKingston. It has been a game-changer in the work I do as a Reading Specialist and SWI tutor. This is one session with two students. One of the many tools I use is a card set called Truer Words. Although SWI isn’t a program, I adore the inspiration Truer Words cards by Emily Brooks O'Connor provide! Each card has the historical root of the word-- the etymology, morphology, and phonology. We explored the <remote> word card from Volume 1 today with this pair. The students' scholarship blew me away. In this session, we discovered words with the <mote> base. Each photo documents the deep connection these two students of mine shared with meaning. This is a typical day with SWI. The curiosity and engagement are their own reward. I tutor and consult in the South SF Bay Area. For more information, click on contact or go to Wordworks Kingston. Pete Bowers’ website is a treasure trove of videos, research, and links to blogs that describe structured word inquiry with all age levels. This is a warm and inviting community of scholars. It is with humility and honor that I include myself among this group.
